About IKIGAI

IKIGAI is a small, independent fashion studio based in Finland, founded on the idea of creating clothing with meaning, care, and longevity.

Each IKIGAI piece is designed and sewn by one person, with attention to detail at every stage — from pattern cutting to the final stitch. This allows the brand to stay slow, intentional, and transparent, and to focus on quality rather than quantity.

Thoughtful design

IKIGAI designs are rooted in femininity, comfort, and adaptability. Most garments are adjustable, allowing them to fit different bodies and to change with you over time. Instead of following fast-moving trends, IKIGAI focuses on timeless silhouettes that can be worn for years.

Materials with a second life

Environmental responsibility is at the heart of IKIGAI.

Most garments are made using surplus, deadstock, or second-hand fabrics sourced from large brands, recycling centres, and local suppliers — with a strong preference for materials already available in Finland. This approach helps reduce textile waste and gives existing materials a new purpose.

Despite working primarily with surplus fabrics and depending on their availability, IKIGAI prioritises natural materials whenever possible, and strives to select fabrics based on quality, durability, and suitability for each design.

All patterns are cut to maximise fabric use, and leftover scraps are saved for smaller items or patchwork projects.

Slow fashion, honestly made

IKIGAI is a one-person company. This means production is limited, but it also means full transparency: no mass production, no hidden processes, and no unnecessary waste.

Ready-made garments are produced in small quantities, while custom-made pieces are created in close collaboration with the client.

Clothing with purpose

The name IKIGAI refers to a reason for being — something that brings value and intention to everyday life. Through thoughtful design, responsible material choices, and careful craftsmanship, IKIGAI aims to offer clothing that feels meaningful, personal, and made to last.

Fabric donation & custom work

IKIGAI works mainly with surplus and existing fabrics, giving materials a second life whenever possible. If you have fabric you no longer need and would like to see it used with care, you’re welcome to get in touch about donating it.

In addition to ready-made pieces, IKIGAI also offers small-scale custom work and alterations in person at the studio in Tuomelan koulu. This is not part of the online shop, but an extension of the same values: thoughtful design, longevity, and respect for materials.
